News Release:
Bauer Energy Design Inc. www.bauerenergydesign.com is installing a 35 kVa PLITRON toroidal transformer at KNF Poultry in Elmira, Ontario. The facility is owned by Ken Frieburger and Walter Metzger.
The purpose of the project is to demonstrate the value of significantly lowering differential and common electrical noise through the novel use of an ultra low impedance grounding system on both the primary and secondary side of a low noise toroidal transformer.
The system will be installed in Barn 1 of KNF Poultry's 10 Barns. It is the barn with the largest power load and will be the easiest to monitor the efficacy and benefits of the system in. The transformer will be installed with the back-up generator and utility feeding the primary side and the secondary side of the transformer feeding the electrical system of Barn 1.
Primary Feed 240 Volt 60 Hz Single Phase (Back-up Generator and Utility) -> (Grounded to a Harger Enhanced Ground Rod for Primary)-> PLITRON 35 kVa transformer -> Secondary Feed 240 Volt 60 Hz Single Phase (Grounded to a Harger Enhanced Ground Rod for the Secondary) -> Barn 1 Distribution Panels (The Harger Enhanced Ground Rods will be placed 15 meters apart so that they cannot feed into each other)
As a brief history to this project we Bauer Energy Design Inc. have audited farms in Wisconsin whose electrical systems were successfully upgraded to eliminate stray voltage with tradition noise reduction technology devices at great cost and effort by Lakeview Electric Contractors, Inc. Lakeview has successfully completed these electrical upgrades on over 120 large and small dairy and swine farms to date. They are the one of the few firms world-wide to have successfully treated stray voltage that is caused by faulty electrical system design, electrical common and differential noise from the utility and faulty electrical equipment including variable speed drives and electric motors. In all cases herd health issues due to stray voltage were remedied. This effort has been documented by ourselves and due to the enormous impact it had on herd health we decided to put our resources into improving the excellent work that already had been done. We are currently working with Lakeview in the United States and we have full access to their experience and resources. As an aside Lakeview is installing and distributing our "0" Zeta Potential water treatment systems and has completed 15 systems to date all with resounding success. We will be publishing these success stories in September of this year. The impact of dealing with the combination of water and electrical quality issues successfully has now been documented into economic numbers and the payback on larger dairy operations in some cases is immediate due to their inability to economically operate in severe stray voltage conditions. In most cases the payback is within 6 months. The minimum expected increase in milk production due to excellent power and water quality is 10 pounds within 45 to 60 days. Every farmer with the Bauer Energy Design "0" Zeta Potential water system with good power quality has the ability to reach the genetic potential of their animals. For instance in farms using our water systems Avigen of Brazil has taken extreme interest because some of our farmers have already gone beyond the genetic potential of the birds. One farm ChickWorks owned by Greg and Verna Walter of Binbrook, Ontario (905) 902-7528 have experienced a dramatic improvement in their flocks even though they were a top producer to begin with. As Greg Walter stated to me; "Avigen was totally blown away by the results of the birds due to our excellent management practices and the new water system."
Though Lakeview was successful we felt that using noise reduction technology devices such as the nanocrystal technology Lakeview used was only a partial solution.
We installed the nanocrystal technology devices for testing in January of this year at three locations in Ontario. We observed at one farm ChickWorks owned by Greg and Verna Walter a very marked difference in the audible noise level of the transformers and radiated heat from the step down transformers.
We also were able to measure a 24% increase in lumen output from the incandescent lighting in the poultry barns. The lighting had to be turned down to accommodate for this increase.

This transformer will be novel in the following ways:
-
It will use two separate low impedance Harger Ehanced Ground Rods one for the primary side of the transformer and the other for the secondary side of the transformer; this will provide an absolute ground isolation from the utility to the farm
-
It will use the NBT noise reduction technology of PLITRON this is the same technology used on expensive medical equipment by Siemens world-wide this will provide laboratory grade noise reduced power
-
The noise that is removed from the incoming primary power will go to the primary ground and will not be returned to the utility therefore helping clean the power on the utility grid
-
The transformer will control inrush current to minimize the effects of power spikes
-
The transformer will have 8 full cycles of instantaneous power available to give all electrical motors a true soft start capability
-
The variable speed drives will be unable to produce stray voltage due to the ultra low noise power and the low impedance grounding
-
The low impedance grounds will offer a similar level of lightning protection as found on telecommunications towers
-
The wiring resistance due to noise will be greatly reduced therefore providing measurable power savings
-
Digital equipment including computers will have much greater performance characteristics and longer component life
-
Eddy currents produced in properly functioning electrical motors will be greatly reduced therefore electromagnetic radiation from the electric motors will be minimized (Quality and design integrity of electric motors is a separate subject area and low noise power will not correct a faulty electric motor. In the field we have observed faulty motor designs even in brand new motors that have been sourced off-shore. A design standard for electric motors for use in agriculture needs to be developed rather than waiting for animal health issues to be a reason to change out one motor for another one.)
-
Reduce significantly power consumption due to lowering the resistance in the electrical wiring and controlling the electrical demand on the farm side
-
Contribute to a significant improvement in the ability of the utility to manage its power distribution due to the improved ground quality and noise reduction
-
Observe the animal health impact and benefits due to ultra low noise conditions (This has never been done before)
We are applying for an NRC, SRDC (Government Grant) approval for this project and are asking that the Ontario Federation of Agriculture and Hydro One to become involved in an audit capacity.
The transformer will be installed the week of August 13th.
We are very excited about this project.
The expected installation cost for a 35kVa load will be in the range of $10,000 including Harger Ground Rods and basic labor.
For larger loads multiple transformers can be used and it is economical to do up to a 1 megawatt load.
